Hangover 101 the basics

This post is a simple run-down of the best basic methods to get rid of a hangover for when you’re feeling rotten the morning after. The list comprises of common household ingredients that you’re aleady likely to have in your kitchen.

1. Keep hydrated – This means drinking a lot of water to fight the dehydration and it also helps flush out any of the crap still in your body from the processed alcohol.

TOP TIP: If you don’t have any alka seltzer try adding a little salt and sugar to your water which will replenish your sodium and glycogen levels.

2. Eat double eggs and bacon on toast for breakfast – The eggs will help eliminate the left over toxins in your body plus the combination of the protein in the bacon and the carbohydrates in the toast will replace some if the lost amino acids your body and brain need for a speedy recovery. It’ll also speed up your metabolism which can also get rid of your hangover quicker.

TOP TIP: Try eating greasy food (i.e. Burger and fries) or even downing a spoon of olive oil before drinking as it’ll aide in the absorption of alcohol when you do start boozing.

3. Drink gatorade/sports drink – Always handy to have in the fridge after a night out on the lash but not always something we’d necessarily have. Make sure you stock up on these bad boys as they’re a great hangover killer, they replace the lost electrolytes in your body which are extremely important when it comes to curing a hangover.

TOP TIP: Avoid coffee and carbonated drinks – Any caffeine based drinks will only dehydrate you further and can make you feel nauseous.

4. Bananas – Have a banana! Perfect morning or afternoon snack that’ll give you a hefty dose of electrolytes and potassium that were peed away as you were putting on those beer goggles.

TOP TIP: If you’re fresh out of bananas give kiwi fruits or nuts a go which work in a similar way.

5. Fruit Juice – Get a glass of orange juice with your breakfast! The fructose (natural sugar) in fruit will keep your energy levels up and also helps get rid of a hangover through eliminating the ethenol toxins. It’s high in vitamins and nutrients which is why it’s a winner on every level. High score and bonus points!

TOP TIP: If you’re not a fan of fruit juices then get some vitamin B and C supplements which’ll also do the job.

Top 4 celebrity hangover cures

What with all the film premieres, product launches and lavish parties they get invited to you’d think that celebrities would know a thing or two when it comes to hangovers. But what do they really know how to get rid of a hangover? We take a look at the top 8 celebrity hangover cures.

JAMIE OLIVER

Jamie Oliver explains his hangover curesBeing a TV chef, Jamie should know his ‘onions’, so to speak, when it comes to a great hangover recipe. His personal recommendation comes in the form of double eggs and bacon, which in our eyes is always a winner. Eggs contain cysteine which helps to break down the toxins in your body and the protein in the both the eggs and bacon will provide you with much needed energy the morning after.

PARIS HILTON

Paris Hilton – Wasted again! If there’s one person who knows about partying (well, it’s the only thing she knows about) it’s got to be professional party animal Paris Hilton. Her solution to curing the after effects of a heavy night is a McDonald’s large quarter pounder and cheese meal. Although this may seem like a good idea it would’ve been much more beneficial to have it before she started partying as it helps slow down the absorption of alcohol. I’d stick to what you know Paris, which unfortunately for you would appear to be very little indeed.

PRINCE HARRY

Harry out on the razz! The party loving royal has certainly had his fair share of hangovers so we’d expect a top quick fix for getting rid of a hangover. So what’s Harry’s miracle cure all? Oh, it’s a strawberry milkshake. Might be good if you’ve got an upset stomach as a result of a night out on the lash but it’s more likely to make you barf and add to your headache at the same time. Nice try your royal highness.

OZZY OSBOURNE

Ozzy in trouble after drinkingThe iron man lived out most of his life with a hangover but Ozzy’s home hangover remedy is almost as eccentric as the Rock legend himself. His bizarre cocktail consists of 4 tablespoons of port, the same amount of brandy, milk, nutmeg and egg yolks. Erm, yeah, it’ll definitely get you drunk again but not so sure it’ll have any effect other than delaying your hangover for later. Probably says more about a man who once bit the head off a bat live on stage than anything actually practical that’ll get rid of a hangover.

Does Drinkin’ Mate really cure a hangover?

No surprises here, yet another miracle hangover cure on the market that claims to be the ultimate medicine to take in order to get rid of a hangover and wake up the next day feeling clear headed and ready for action. It’s ‘all natural’ Wild Guava Leaf extract is supposed to defend against the normal hangover symptoms such as sluggishness, dicky stomach, dehydration as well as general aches and pains.

The difference between Drinkin’ Mate and most other hangover remedies is that you take it before you go to bed whilst still feeling a bit tipsy. It claims that you’ll wake up the next day feeling right as rain; I think I’ve heard that one somewhere else before. So does this Berry flavoured powder have what it takes to get rid of a hangover or is it just another cure all scam?

I tested it out after a night out down the local bar with the lads; 4 pints of premium lager and a couple of Jacky Daniels later and I’m wearing my beer goggles. It’s time to head home and sleep it off. Before hitting the hay, I mix up the the Drinkin’ Mate with some water, down it and and then proceed to pass out with my face buried in the pillow.

The next morning

I wake up the next day feeling surprisingly ok, especially considering the amount I supped yesterday. My head is a little fuzzy but nothing that I can’t handle and my stomach should be able to get through breakfast with out too many complaints. It still feels pretty apparent to the rest of my body that I was drunk last night but taking the medicine has definitely helped. Well it could be that or having an extra hour in bed.

Overall, if offered the choice of either taking this supplement to help get rid of a hangover or having nothing, I’d opt for Drinkin’ Mate every time. It’s no more effective than a lot of products out there but is still handy to keep in the cupboard just for those times when you know you’ve over done it and have an something important to do the next day.

3 out of 5 – Helps but not the cure all it claims to be

Get rid of a hangover the celebrity way

Celebrities have an opinion on everything and due to a massively inflated ego they always seem think they have the most insightful answers to everyone’s problems. In reality though most are as clueless as the average punter. Especially it seems when it comes to the best ways to get rid of a hangover.

Point in case, Hollywood megastar and wife of Coldplay, Gwenyth Paltrow. She may be very knowledgeable when it comes to acting in Hollywood blockbusters and daft children’s names (Apple Blythe Alison Martin for christ’s sake!) but as her recent blog post would suggest, she knows absolutely zero about hangover cures.

Before and after effects of drinking

Biologists (as well as a large portion of the internet) were quick to dismiss most of the wonder cures on Gwennie’s blog saying that they had no scientific basis whatsoever. The others involved exotic ingredients that I’d never even heard of (Umeboshi plums anyone?) and seemed had more to do with the celebrity microbiotic diet rather than finding the ultimate way to get rid of a hangover.

There was one remedy that Paltrow had devised that seems like it could work and was super simple to make. It was an almond butter, manuka honey and banana sandwich on toasted rye bread. A little fancy but it has all the ingredients that are pertinent for recovery the morning after. Almond butter for protein; manuka honey for blood sugar levels; banana for lost electrolytes; and bread for carbs to help speed up your metabolism. It was suggested that you could top it off with Goji berries if you’re feeling especially ‘fabulous’. I think I’ll give that one a miss, thanks all the same Mrs. Paltrow.

Another cure was actually a promotion for a health drink called ‘Mercy’ that Gwenyth had actually invested in! In a shameless attempt to plug her product she recommends the elixir containing ‘amino acids, vitamins, minerals and herbs’ as a great way to get rid of a hangover. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem like it’d be anymore effective than Gatorade in replacing the lost salts and electrolytes the next day. We’ll be reviewing the effectiveness of ‘Mercy’ in upcoming post.

The top 3 Hangover iPhone Apps

There’s an app for absolutely everything nowadays! Unfortunately none of these include making you breakfast in bed and nursing you back to full health after a night out on the lash. There are however numerous apps that claim to help get rid of a hangover in a variety of novel ways.

I must say I’m pretty sceptical of how effective any of these could actually be, after all most of the hangover cures I’ve ever heard of involve ingesting something. And really, what can we do to relieve our hangovers with just a phone? It’s when I get to loading up the first app that i’m reminded that this isn’t just any old phone, it’s only the most technologically advanced phone on the planet, the Apple iPhone: Curer of hangovers and saviour of all mankind! Well… something like that.

1. Brainwave Hangover Relief

Get rid of a hangover using an iPhone appBased on “the deeply relaxing low-frequency alpha and theta waves” apparently that’ll help do away with your headache, nausea and other discomforts from a hangover. Well, we’ll just see about that won’t we.

Firstly, I must say the interface is incredibly simple and therefore easy to use. You can set your own sounds such
as Ocean, Rain, Thunder and even something called Pink Noise as well as set the duration up to a ridiculous
24hours! I think I’ll just stick to the preset program
for hangover relief.

So I tried it for 30mins and it definitely makes you feel more relaxed and my head even feels a little better than before I started. I can’t really say that it entirely got rid of my hangover but still helped with the headache slightly.

3 out of 5 – An unorthodox hangover cure helps soothe and clear your head

Brainwave is available for free from iTunes here so it’s worth a shot.

2. Hangover Cures: 40 Home Remedies

Hangover cure AppMore of a standard recipe app which includes a lot of similar information on how to get rid of a hangover as most sites on the web.

It’s fairly light hearted and claims to have “40 new, different and crazy hangover cures”. I was surprised to find out that pickle juice has a similar effect as Gatorade in replacing lost electrolytes but all in all there’s not a great deal of information on here that I couldn’t find elsewhere. It also includes some reasonably ineffective recipes that could end up wasting your time. It is however a handy and easy to navigate hangover cure dictionary.

2 out of 5 – A quick and easy reference but feels like they’ve padded out the 40 cures

Hangover Cures is available for $1.99 from iTunes here

3. Drink’n’Track

Hangover cures appEver wake up the morning after with out a clue of how many drinks you had? Here’s the answer, Drink’n’Track, an app that helps you keep an eye on how much you’re drinking. Every time you have a drink just tap the type of drink you had and it’ll add it to your total. Choose from small or big beer, wheat beer, wine, cocktail, long drink, short drink and shot.

This is a great app for someone like me who can never remember how many drink I’ve had and wonder why
I have such a rotten hangover. It’s also a great way to
force yourself to behave or, if you’re so inclined, to show
off to your mates about your boozing skills.

Either way this is a great deterrent for having too many rather than an out and out app to help get rid of a hangover all at a very reasonable price.

4 out of 5 – A great app to keep track of the amount of alcohol you consume

Drink’n’Track is available for $0.99 from iTunes here

Is Blowfish the ultimate hangover remedy?

Latest miracle cure Blowfish
So the latest over the counter miracle cure called ‘Blowfish’ has been on the market in the
US since last year and is due to hit Europe in the next few months. It claims to get rid of a hangover in an amazing 15 minutes! That’s just mental.

It contains an antacid to settle the stomach as well as 60 mg of caffeine and 1000 mg of aspirin combination for your head, the maximum approved amount in one dose! It may sound very similar to Alka Seltzer XS but it claims it’s effects are more potent due to the higher dosage of aspirin.

To top it all off it wasn’t even created by a scientist! It was created by Brenna Haysom, a former fanancier and Harvard graduate. She came across the formula by trying out 100s of different ways to get rid of her hangovers. Once she found the combination that worked her friends couldn’t get enough so Miss Haysom took it to the New York-based manufacturers Rally Labs LLC who tested it and agreed to collaborate with her.

It all just sounded a bit too good to be true so the Get Rid Of A Hangover HQ ordered some from Amazon to give it a test run.

The conclusion

After skulling the reasonable amount of 5 pints of strong lager the night before I woke up with a fuzzy head and a bad gut. I’d say I had a moderate hangover. This was definitely a good opportunity to put Blowfish to the test and see if it actually could get rid of a hangover effectively.

As directed by the instructions, to use Blowfish I just dissolve the effervescent tablets in water then knock it back and wait for it to take effect. After waiting for 10 minutes to pass it didn’t feel like much had happened but around the 15 minute mark I was starting to feel an improvement.

Plink plink fizz - Blowfish tablets

I wouldn’t say that this was the miracle cure it was cracked up to be but for mild to moderate hangover symptoms it actually did a pretty good job. I certainly felt a lot more like normal afterwards; my head had cleared, I felt more alert and my stomach had settled.

All in all I’d give Blowfish a score of 3 out of 5. It’s definitely worth keeping some in your cupboards if you find yourself with a mild to moderate hangover but it may not do the trick for anything stronger.

Blowfish is available from Amazon here for $49.99 for 50 tablets.

SCIENTIFIC FACT: Bacon sandwich
can cure a hangover!

Bacon sandwich

Who’d have thunk it, something as simple as two pieces of toast with a couple of fried up greasy hog rashers slapped in the middle may be one of the most effective meals to get you back on the road to recovery. Researchers from Newcastle University’s Centre for Life have found that the winning combination of protein in the bacon and carbohydrates in the bread speeds up your metabolism which helps your body get rid of a hangover more effectively.

The carbohydrates and protein breaks down into amino acids which your body is desperate for, these help replenish the lost neurotransmitters as a result of binge drinking which get your head out back into thinking mode and out of the land of the walking dead.

I’ve always been partial to a bacon sarnie after a night on the ale and now I know why. There’s a great sense of satisfaction in finding out that one of your all time favourite hangover cures has some scientific reasoning for making you feel better.

Here’s my tips for making the ultimate Bacon sandwich.

Preparation time:
5 minutes

Cooking time:
10 minutes to 15 minutes

Ingredients

• 2 tbsp olive oil

• 8 rashers Unsmoked Drycure Back Bacon

• Butter

• 2 slices of crusty sliced white bread

• Spicy Brown Sauce, to taste

Method

1. Wack the oil in a frying pan – get it up to a medium heat then toss in the bacon for 4-5mins until it starts getting nice and crispy.

2. While the bacon’s cooking get buttering a couple of slices of your bread; make sure you spread on some of the spicy brown sauce too.

3. Although I like mine as greasy as they come, it’s not very healthy so it’s best to dab the bacon with some kitchen towel once it’s out the pan to get rid of any excess oil.

4. Place the bacon evenly across the bread, put on some extra sauce if you like it really saucy then sandwich it together and shove it in your gob. Mmmmmmm mmmmm… Lovely!

This one’s saved my ‘bacon’ a few times (oh dear!), I had one this morning after 6 cans of Carlsberg lager yesterday and I must say I’m definitely feeling much more level headed. I’m just about ready to get my ass out of bed and face the day now. And, more importantly, I reckon I’m feeling much more equipped to have a glass of Vino with my lunch, just the one mind. Bloody brilliant.

Why not give this hangover recipe a go and let me know if it helps get rid of your hangover.

8 Hangover food and drink myths
Part 2 – The ones that do work!

Finally, some hangover cures that will actually help get rid of a hangover!

Greasy and fatty foods

In the morning – Eggs
Everyone knows that eggs rule, not only will they give you the much needed energy first thing in the morning but they also contain cysteine which helps break down the toxins that cause the hangover in the first place.

Verdict:TRUE

Before drinking
This is probably the most effective time to line your stomach by eating a king sized double cheesburger with a portion of fries that Elvis would be proud of. It will help slow down the absorption of alcohol when you do start drinking. This makes your body better equipped to process the harmful chemicals created by the alcohol. Another slightly healthier option is to do it the Mediterranean way and down a spoonful of olive oil before hitting the hard stuff.

Verdict: TRUE

Water

Number 1 on the list of ultimate hangover cures has to be water. Without this you’re completely buggered. It’s a saviour at anytime; a glass in between drinks, before going to bed and especially a few on the morning after. It fights the dehydration and aides in dealing with any left over nasties in the stomach. A little trick if you’re all out of Alkaseltzer (more about this in Hangover medicine myths) is to add salt and sugar to your glass of water once the hangover’s kicked in, this replenishes the sodium and glycogen lost due to the effects of the alcohol.

Verdict: TRUE

Bananas

Go on… go bananas. Not only will they help replenish some of the lost electrolytes (very important), they have the added bonus of being rich in potassium which helps replace the potassium you lost due to the diuretic nature of alcohol. Alternatively, Kiwi fruits, nuts and sports drinks work in the same way.

Verdict: TRUE

Orange juice and other fruit juices

The heavy hitter in this one is the Fructose, which is the sugar found in fruits. It gives you natural energy and speeds up the process of purifying any left over toxins. It’s also high in vitamins and nutrients which help replace any that you’re lacking due to the diuretic effects of alcohol. Vitamin B and C supplements can also be taken if you’re not that into juices.

Verdict: TRUE

Sports drinks – Lucozade, Gatorade

Triple whammy! They replace lost electrolytes, help with rehydration and zap the crap leftover in your stomach. What’s not to like? I used to make the mistake of grabbing a can of fizzy pop but try to avoid any carbonated soft drinks like cola as they contain caffeine which will further dehydrate you and they can upset your stomach.

Take me to 8 Hangover food and drink myths – Part 1 The ones that don’t work

8 Hangover food and drink myths
Part 1 – The ones that don’t work

Everyone has their own tried and tested hangover remedies, some passed down from generation to generation but do any of them actually work? We take a look at the most popular hangover myths online to find out if they really do help get rid of a hangover.

Hair of the dog

This may come as a shock to most and it personally it’s one of my favourites, but drinking more alcohol to cure your hangover doesn’t actually work! It just tends to delay the effects of the hangover and in my experience leads to getting drunk again, meaning you enter a whole new level of pain thanks to the ‘double’ hangover the next day.

The term ‘Hair of the dog that bit you’ dates back to Shakespearean England when rabid dog bites were treated by rubbing hair from the crazed mongrel into the wound it inflicted. Call me crazy but that doesn’t sound like it’d be particularly effective either.

Verdict: MYTH

Dry burnt toast

One my mother swears by, and yes, it is as disgusting as it sounds. Thankfully it’s a load of rubbish. Although activated charcoal is used by doctors to treat other types of poisons, the carbon on the burnt toast isn’t the same as activated charcoal and is therefore useless when it comes to getting rid of a hangover. In your face Mom!

Verdict: MYTH

Strong black coffee

A few cups of java after a night out on the razz may seem obligatory to get us functioning again but it’s positive short term effects are not worth it in the long run. Although it helps initially to get over the fatigue and headache (both will return once the caffeine has worn off), like alcohol, it is a diuretic which means it makes us want to go piss. We’re already dehydrated from the booze so essentially coffee is just adding to the problem.

Verdict: MYTH

Greasy and fatty foods

This one has varying degrees of success depending on what stage of the night out you eat.

Before bed
A drunken visit to Abra-kebabra or Texas Fried Rooster may seem like a good idea when it comes to kicking out time at the local bar but it’s more likely to make you blow chunks than help cure your hangover in the morning. This is because most of the alcohol in your body has already taken effect and is already being processed.

Verdict: MYTH

In the morning – The greasy fry up breakfast
The full english breakfast with bacon, sausages, two fried eggs, baked beans, mushrooms and even a black pudding might be the staple of any hangover but it’s really only the eggs that’ll help you out. The rest will make you feel like it would pretty much any other time you’d eat it, bloated and queasy.

Verdict: MYTH

Less common hangover symptoms

Besides the more common hangover symptomslike a headache, nausea, diarrhea and fatigue, there are a whole host of other annoying consequences to getting stewed. It’s important that we first understand the cause before we can start to get rid of a hangover.

The Blues / Drinker’s remorse – “Dude… WTF happened last night?!” That’s right, you’re feeling like you made a complete tit out of yourself and probably pissed everyone off. Not to worry though… it’s just a good old dose of drinker’s remorse playing tricks with your mind. Alcohol is a depressant which can unfortunately affect your mental state, try to think positively and get some exercise. Your friends will probably have forgiven you by the end of the week anyway.

Blurred vision – Having eyesight worse than Mr Magoo isn’t uncommon when it comes to the morning after. Other related problems can be trouble focusing, shaky vision and seeing spots.

Increased heart rate – One of the scarier hangover symptoms. Again, this one’s very common and there’s no sure fire way to get rid of it. Try to relax and drink cold water to cleanse your system. The palpitations should gradually become less regular as the day goes on. If they don’t it’s probably best to have a few days off the booze and go on the dreaded detox.

No appetite – Getting tanked up plays havoc with your stomach which can also lead to not wanting to eat. Food is an important part of curing a hangover so if you don’t eat your recovery time will most likely take longer.

Aching body – Waking up feeling bruised and battered sporting a UDI (Unidentified Drinking Injury) and not knowing why is common place for the seasoned drinker. The only vaguely fun part of this is trying to remember how many drinks you’d had before you fell over.

Anxiety – It’s time to venture out and face the world but you’re still in no fit state to see the light of day. We’re certainly not at our best after a heavy bout of drinking and it can really take it out of us mentally. There’s no easy way out of this one other than an extended stretch of sobriety.

Insomnia – Similar to the reasons for fatigue within hangover symptoms, this one’s caused by the effect of booze on your sleep patterns. We’re more likely to wake up after drinking alcohol thanks to a headache, needing to go for a leak, dehydration and excessive booze sweats.

Hypersensitivity to light and noises – The real reason why Slash is always wearing sunglasses, even when he’s indoors. Nope, he’s not trying to act super cool, he’s just got a massive Jack Daniel’s hangover. Yet another ethanol induced hangover symptom that can also make us more irritable than usual but will sadly not make us into an instant rock god, even if we’re forced to wear our shades inside.
